In today's episode of Saturday Stash Dive, I show you how to make a layout using letters as a mask to create an interesting Title. There is a sketch for this layout and I have the sketch below.
I have used this sketch so many times and I would say that it is my go to sketch. It's very easy to adapt to either a portrait or landscape photo. And it also gives you a lot of options as to where to put your journaling or even your title.
The picture is about how my sister and I had never seen a cactus in the wild (if you call if the wild.) So when we were on our road trip down to the Hoover Dam we stopped off at a lake and we saw one. We just had to get our picture taken. I know it sounds crazy but we have never been any desert type place to see a cactus, so it was very interesting to see one close up. There are very different than what I had pictured.
I used a lot of my older type stash up from stamps to stickers. It was a lot of fun to dive into them to make the layout a fun and playful piece.

Today is Saturday, you know what that means. Another episode of Saturday Stash Dive where this month's focus is on letters. I must say, I love today's layout. I love how much texture is created by making your own background using up letters.
I used the same color combo as I did for last weeks episode. I love the blue, yellow and black. It's classy, yet energetic. I love it. I must say that I'm not a yellow lover but I could very well turn into one with this combination.
I made fun embellishment clusters, using a stamped image and some photo frame from the Pier collection by Crate Paper. I love those frames and have been dying to get them. A huge thanks to Sandra who sent them to me in a RAK. I also added some black epoxy heart from Close To My Heart and some stickers from On Trend (Crate Paper) and Woodland Park (October Afternoon). With a finishing touch of some star wood vernier and misted butterflies (Studio Calico) I felt that the clusters were finished.
So I realize that I screwed up on the title. It was supposed to say "Friends Forever" but I was tired when I did this layout and ended up putting the title as "Forever Forever." I did make the changes to it after I took the pictures, but I didn't take the pictures after I made the changes. I just thought I would put up the pictures with my error to show you how funny it was.
Here is the finished page. I just love the paper I chose. From the background paper from the DIY Shop (Crate Paper) to the yellow triangle paper from Color and Composition (Webster's Pages). I even dove into my stash really deep and pulled out the blue paper I used for the photo mat. This paper is from Close to My Heart. I have a prep video for all the supplies I used in the video below.

I had 3 videos to upload yesterday, and it just seemed to take forever. I'm not sure if it's with the updates that YouTube put in yesterday, or what. But they all were posted early this morning. Hi Everyone. It's Saturday, so you know what that means. It's another episode of Saturday Stash Dive. I will be continuing the focus of using 6x6 paper pads on a layout. I did do a prep video for this episode and I was meaning to post it on the blog but somehow I missed doing that. Here is the prep video:
So from the pictures, you can see I definitely went a little out of my comfort zone and tried something completely out of my style. I think it's important to try new things to see if you can incorporate these new techniques into a layout. Although, I'm not too happy with how the page turned out, I love the elements of the page and I think I would try doing this page another way.
I love the colors that I chose for this layout. I just love the soft and light colors and how the pop of Gold Pow Glitter Paper just added some interest to the page. This was my first time trying a Mood Board and I can say, I love it. I love how it can give you a fresh set of eyes to try something new.
I must say the only thing that went terrible wrong with the page was the excessive amount of misting splatters on the left side of the photo. I was trying to do a "Boca" type effect and ended more like a bad paint ball accident. I do love the misting on the right side of the photo. I wish I did that one first, then I would have just left the other side alone.
I have to admit, I am loving this new series. I get so inspired by all of the layouts I see on the 50 Projects Facebook Page. When Tiffany puts of the Motivation Monday, my brain starts spinning as to how I can incorporate that into my Saturday Stash Dive. I love seeing everybody's layouts and cards. It amazes me how everyone's style is so different.
For this weeks SSD, I started by looking for inspiration. I was looking on Printerest and message boards for inspiration but nothing really jumped out and grabbed my attention. It wasn't until I was moving some things around my scrap room where I came upon my binder of Shimelle Lain classes. I just thought for the fun of it I would open the book and just look at the pictures and see if anything spoke to me. Then, there it was. The layout just jumped off of the page and I knew I had to use this design. It was perfect. I loved how you could used several papers so you could get a hint of each pattern. So now I had my plan.
Next came inspiration. It is so true when the say inspiration can happen anywhere and that is exactly what happened. Sandra (ohsnapgonzo on YouTube) and I were having a Skype scrapbook crop one night and I showed her what the modeling paste, that I had made, did. She loved how it got all puffy. Then she said I should do a layout using clouds on the top of a page. So I was keeping this in mind while I was picking my papers.
I chose a paper pad that I purchased from Studio Calico for March, called Neverland. I loved how their was some cloud paper and city skyline paper. Now that I had the paper, I knew what photo I wanted to use. I kept that in the back of my mind while I was pulling the rest of my embellishments. I placed everything down on my desk and then put the picture on top. GENIUS!!!! It looked brilliant!
I couldn't wait to get started, so I got to it right away. The farther into the layout I got, the more awesomer it got. (Awesomer, is that even a word.) I just loved how it turned out.

Ok, I must confess. These challenges between Sandra and I, are so much fun. We talked about it the other day and we are going to keep going with it for as long as we can. We are discussing a lot more episodes of this in the future....I hope everyone stays tuned to YouTube so they can hear when we are going to have the next one coming up.
For this challenge, we needed to use our Silhouette to cut out files and use at least 3 of them on a layout. I chose to cut mine out on white cardstock so that it would give me some versatility of inking them of painting them a different color to match my layout.
I must say I really love how this layout turned out. I used most of the items from the Studio Calico May kit, called Planetarium. I just love all of the dimension of the modeling paste and the flecks of gold glitter.
It even impressed me more when I took pictures of it and it sparkled. That doesn't happen very often when you take pictures with your iPhone.

So the other layout (Little Moments) didn't really turn out the way I planned. However, this layout exceeded my expectations. I already knew what color scheme I wanted to use. I have another layout from the same place, but this time I was in the pictures. I made a layout using a pink, black/grey, and aqua color scheme. I wanted to use the same colors, but I wanted to change the feel of it.
Because I already new the colors I wanted it use, it was pretty easy to go into the Kit (Studio Calico Neverland Kit for March) and pick out the paper I wanted to use. Unfortunately, there really was only one piece of pink paper that I could use. So with that being said, I went into my scrap stash to see what was there. I found 3 pieces of patterned paper that helped bring it all together. I couldn't find the aqua/mint color I was looking for so I ended up using some new paper from the Party Day collection from Crate Paper. It coordinated so well with the other colors.
I really love the fact that I got to mix old product with new product. I feel like I don't use enough of my scraps up and they are really starting to get away on me. So a small goal for me is to use at lease one piece of old scrap paper on each layout. (I will make a good attempt anyway.)

Ok, so sometimes you try an idea out and it doesn't completely go the way you wanted. This would be that time. I tried experimenting with the mask that we got in the Studio Calico kit for March. I used Gesso Paint with the mask. I was hoping to get a bit of dimention to the layout. I'm not completely happy with how it turned out.

I am posting today to show you the page layouts that I made using my own Page kit. I made 5 single page layouts with the kit. I know I could have made more, but I just received my Studio Calico June Kit in the mail. I know that I would like to make pages with it so I set aside the kit for now. I keep forgetting to add my videos to my blog post. I have an easy link button on my video software that automatically adds my videos to Youtube. But I keep forgetting to put them here on my blog.
I know the first few videos are rather short, but my computer and I were fighting that day. There are 10 videos so the tutorial is quite long, but I wanted to do it in real time so that you could see the process on how to put it together. I hope you enjoy.
I have been busy working on some new layouts. I have more works on progress but because I have no computer. I have been relying on my iPhone.
I have used several different papers for each layout. The only one I used the same paper collection was for the "no smile" and the "coolsville" layouts. The "no smile" layout was the mr. Campy collection from American crafts and the "coolsville" is all close to my heart. I'm not sure of the name but it's the new travel papers from the spring and summer catalogue.
Here is a quick layout I made using 2 pieces of cocoa card stock from close to my heart. I used the couch potato paper from Bella blvd. (brown check pattern), root beer barrels from October afternoon (light brown spot pattern as well as the embellishment circles), 2 patterns from sassafras lass girl's best friend (diamond pattern) the other pattern i can't locate the name on but it's old an they don't make it anymore. I also used some cocoa ribbon and juniper buttons from close to my heart. The alphas are from thickers. (I'm not sure of the names)
As you can see the layout is fairly simple. I used all 4x6 photos and then just trimmed some of them down to give a better feel to the page. The sketch wanted to use all 2.5x2.5 pictures for the collage piece on the right. My pictures didn't suit this very well, so I instead took one of my bigger images and cut it into 4 blocks to add more Interest.
I had quite a bit of scrap paper left over. And I didn't want it to just sit in my scrap pile for another year, so I decided to make a couple of cards. I just used some ivory card bases from American crafts Christmas cards stack. I used my close to my heart art phillophosy cartridge. I cut out the image square 3 at 2" in colonial white cards stock and then again at 2-1/4" in the black. I put that on one of the "b" sides of the patterned paper cut at 2-1/4". After I assembles all of the paper to the sizes I liked, I hot glued some I am roses pink roses. I also used some prima swirls to accent the swirl stamps. The stamps are from hero arts "thinking of you" and Hampton arts "family". These are really old stamp sets that I had in my stash.

I made the cute little wall hanging in less than 30 minutes. I used a block of wood (from our fence building for the last two weeks). I painted it with black and then dry brushed on some antique gold paint. I the fussy cut the second piece of the patterned paper and used foam squares to pop it up. I used several different layers. Well it is official. The flu season is here. I think everyone is sick. I'm even sick. I don't think it is the H1N1, but I really feel like crap. It is hard enough to lift my head up off of the pillow. I know there are getting to be quite a few H1N1 cases around town. That is why I made this card. I figured with everyone sick, it would be nice to have some "Get Well" cards. Now I feel like I need a "Get Well" card.
I'm not going to go into too much detail on the card I made. It is made with the Crate Paper Orbit collection. The stamp is the Orbit stamp set. And I'm sure there are other details I should list on the card but my brain has stopped functioning.

This week I have had so many challenges thrown at me.
We just found out on Wednesday that my Brother-in-law has to go for heart surgery in November. He's only 37 years old. And seeing how my dad had died from heart complications, we are all very stressed out. We are probably not as stressed out as my brother-in-law though, who is not taking the news very well. I am hoping that the surgery goes well for him. I am hoping that I can go out to Manitoba and help my sister out when he does have the surgery.
And of course, I have my regular stresses with the swim club and hockey practises. I find that I am only home to sleep lately. Wade, my DH, even said that he hardly sees me anymore. This weekend, I only have one hockey game in town so hopefully we can do something as a family this weekend.
I did manage to get another Mojo Monday card made in the midst of all my chaos. This is a standard 5 1/2 x 4 1/4 card. The card stock base is from American Crafts Christmas collection; patterned paper: Basic Grey Figgy Pudding Collection; ribbon: Making Memories Passport Collection; stamps: Close To My Heart; sticker: Love Elsie Noel.
As you can tell by the sketch I didn't follow it exactly. I put my own spin on it. I had a hard time with how the sketch was layed out. So I moved thing around a little bit. I really like the results.
